Visions of America

Sotheby’s brings Clymer, Moran and more to its Art of America sale in New York City.

In January, Sotheby’s will present Visions of America, a multi-day sale with auctions, events and experiences that celebrate American art and culture. The main sale component of the presentation will take place on January 20 at Sotheby’s New York gallery.

Thomas Moran (1837-1926), Green River, Wyoming, 1883, oil on canvas, 13¼ x 20” Estimate: $1/1.5 million

Works in the sale include Thomas Moran’s Green River, Wyoming, an 1883 oil estimated at $1 million to $1.5 million. Moran’s Green River paintings are some his most timeless and collected works, and bidding is expected to be fierce as the lot soars into seven-digit figures.

Another important work being offered is Thomas Worthington Whittredge’s Indian Encampment Under Trees,a work from around 1870 that shows Native American subjects. Like the Moran, this subject from an important Hudson River School painter is incredibly rare and is likely to see steady bidding. It is estimated at $350,000 to $500,000.

John Clymer (1907-1989), Heading for Rendezvous, 1978, oil on Masonite, 10 x 20” Estimate: $70/100,000

Finally, a John Clymer work will also be available, Heading for Rendezvous, a 1978 oil that shows many of the quintessential features of a Clymer painting. Only a handful of late-20th century Western artists’ works are offered at the big New York auction houses and Clymer is one of them.

In addition to the American art sale, Sotheby’s will also present sales related to Americana, the Hudson River School and also Western Art and Design from Bar Cross Ranch, Wyoming. All sales will conclude on January 20 and 21. —
