Holiday Celebration

Legacy Gallery presents 150 new works during its annual Holiday Small Works Show in Arizona.

The holiday season offers many occasions that are unique to December: cold weather and warm fires, traveling to new places and visits with loved ones, and many opportunities for gift-giving. All of these reasons are why holiday gallery shows are so delightful for collectors, and why December has numerous shows to attend during the holiday season. Z.S. Liang, Deep in the Woods, 10 x 17¼" One of those key shows is Legacy Gallery’s 24th annual Holiday Small Works Showin Scottsdale, Arizona. The show, which runs from December 7 through 31, will feature an artist reception on its opening night along with a fixed-price sale. Any unsold works remaining after December 7 will be available through the rest of December. All of the paintings will be 12 by 16 inches or less, and all of the bronzes will be 13 inches in height or less. And, of course, smaller works come with smaller price tags, which gives collectors the chance to buy art as gifts, or just buy a small work for a unique place within a collection.

John Fawcett, Skeptical, oil, 10 x 8"

C. Michael Dudash, Elder of the Blackfeet, oil, 12 x 16"

“The Legacy Gallery Holiday Small Works Show has been taking place since 2000. Each year Legacy Gallery celebrates the holiday season with this show as the start,” the gallery notes. “The evening of the show is very festive with holiday décor, carolers and holiday goodies. Everyone enjoys the entertainment, the wonderful art and always the sale. You never know whose name may be drawn.”

More than 80 artists will be featured in the show, with as many as 150 works offered to collectors.

Don Oelze, The Hunter, oil, 12 x 10"

One of those artists is Don Oelze, whose piece The Hunter will be on view and available. “In The Hunter I tried to capture the essence of a proud Native American hunter and his pony standing against the expansive sky, overlooking the untamed plains,” the artist says. “My desire was to show the hunter, with a face etched by years of experience and wisdom in survival, standing in quiet contemplation, his gaze searching the land for the quarry he seeks, and a connection with a changing world and the still untouched prairie that is his ancestral home.”

Michael Ome Untiedt, Study of Travelers on the Camino Real, oil, 12 x 16"

G. Russell Case, Morning, 12 x 16"

John Fawcett is showing a Native American figure in a portrait-like piece titled Skeptical. “When painting this oil, my model had a concerning look, and I wanted to show the worried feeling with his facial expression,” Fawcett says. “Being an elder in his Lakota tribe, he carried the weight of his people on his shoulders. They had been promised many things with the white man’s treaties, had been misrepresented and lied to, were hopeful for their future, but had every reason to be skeptical.”

Josh Elliott, Upper Two Medicine, oil, 9 x 12"

Painter Z.S. Liang will be presenting a painting of a Native American figure rowing a canoe in a moody setting along the banks of river. “A couple years ago, I bought a canoe,” Liang relates. “I have an Indian model, he is very slim and has clear muscles. Together I have a good chance to catch good photos. The number one issue for a great painting is imagination. I constantly try to find a new angle to look at the activities of Indian daily life. I saw a mysterious world in my imagination: an Indian man was returning home in the woods after fishing, and that was what you see in this painting.”

Josh Elliott, Willow Creek, oil, 10 x 12"

Rick Terry, Doc, bronze, 12 x 4"

Other works in the show include a bronze by Rick Terry, new landscapes from G. Russell Case, a new cowboy work from Bill Anton, a magnificent winter teepee scene from Charlie Fritz, a portrait by C. Michael Dudash, nocturnes by Michael Ome Untiedt and Albin Veselka, and two paintings by Josh Elliott, Upper Two Medicine and Willow Creek, both of which are little gems from an artist that can work both big and small with tremendous results. —
