Artist Focus: Daryl Urig

Daryl Urig has painted his entire life. After graduating from Columbus College of Art & Design, he worked as a graphic designer for 15 years designing packages for Procter & Gamble, Johnson & Johnson, Nestle and other companies. He perfected his teaching talent as an adjunct professor with the University of Cincinnati over the course of a decade. As its academic coordinator, Urig created a four-year program for the University of Cincinnati. He also authored three books on painting: Tips for a Contemporary Painter, Plein Air Painting for Everyone and Painting Knife Explained. He is also a contributing writer for Leisure Paintermagazine in the United Kingdom.

His work has hung in the Columbus Museum of Art and Toledo Museum of Art, as well as in private collections and galleries all around the world. He has won major awards at the Salmagundi Club in New York City and with the Portrait Society of America. He is also an active teacher who offers workshops to promote healthy painting habits.

“I enjoy painting the rich color and texture of the painting knife contrasting the hard to soft edges of the paintbrush,” he says. “I love experimenting with different expressions of the natural paint medium.”

Today Urig lives in Arizona, where he is attracted to the Western landscape. He will have new work on view at the New Frontiers Art Show & Sale in Cheyenne, Wyoming, at the Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum. The show runs through December 3. He is also promoting his newest book, Painting Knife Explained, which can be purchased at several major online bookstores. —
