Artist Focus

Artist Focus: Ron Lape

Born in Mansfield, Ohio, Ron Lape has devoted much of his life to art. “I have been painting since I was a young man. I am a self-taught artist,” he says. “I find inspiration in the West and the older way of life and the people who lived during that time.”

New works include his two cowboys amid later-afternoon light, Golden Our, and also a dramatic hunting scene titled Spring Hunt, showing a line of Native Americans along a ridge.

“My style is a cross between representational and photorealism. I like painting both in detail and looser painterly styles,” he says.

“I think it gives my collectors and new buyers a choice. I make many of my still life artifacts, which gives me a sense of what time and effort it took to make regalia. Creating figurative pieces in vast landscapes is what I enjoy the most. My focus is trying to capture faces and hands while using vibrant colors. It is very challenging but when it comes together I have a great sense of pride. I am also inspired by the landscapes that America holds and the vastness of our great country—it is a great place to live. Painting and sculpting is my focus now. Our kids are grown and my wife and I love the West and the beauty it holds and cannot wait for our next adventure.”
