The Old West is where Colorado artist Gregory Mayse finds his inspiration. His passion is using oil paint to put those inspirations on canvas.
“I work to capture the emotions and character in the faces of my subjects. I want the viewer to appreciate the narrative and the character I put into each subject,” he says. “I am trying to pull them in and look a while longer at the details and other elements the go into each story-telling piece.”

Usually Mayse is working on several pieces at one time in his studio. The music of great Western movie composer Ennio Morricone is often heard echoing through his Western-themed studio.
He continues, “I am fortunate to have had a career as a photographer and now as a painter. I am able to combine my skills with the camera at Western-themed photo shoots to capture reference photos. I use these images as inspiration to create my paintings.”

He has painted commissions of Billy the Kid for a collector in Oklahoma. His paintings have also inspired the written words of well-known cowboy poet Rik “Yonder” Goodall.
As the year winds down, Mayse is busy painting and planning the coming year. Mayse has been invited to the National Pony Express Museum in Missouri in April to paint and display his works.

His paintings have been juried into a variety of fine art shows and exhibited at the National Oil & Acrylic Painters Society Best of America Small Works Show this year. Mayse is represented by several galleries in Colorado and Wyoming. —
