Exceptional Scenes

Hindman presents artwork by prominent 19th- and 20th-century names during its biannual sale.

This November, Hindman is offering a wide variety of Western artwork during its two-day Western & Contemporary Native American Artsale. Among the two sessions, bidders will find a focus on historic Western art, alongside a strong selection of contemporary Western and wildlife paintings, as well as contemporary Native American fine art and objects—a total of nearly 200 lots.

Philip R. Goodwin (1881-1935), Making for Camp, oil on canvas Estimate: $100,000/200,000

“From historic to contemporary, the material featured in this auction displays the quality, range and skill of some of the most important names in Western, Southwestern, wildlife and contemporary Native American art,” says Alexandria Dreas, Western art specialist at Hindman. One of the standout lots in the upcoming sale is Taos Society artist Eanger Irving Couse’s Mysteries of the Stream, estimated at $200,000 to $300,000. “Mysteries of the Stream is an exceptional painting…[and] an iconic example of one of [Couse’s] favorite themes, ‘father and son,’” Dreas notes. “This painting beautifully demonstrates the masterful brushwork and iconic color palette for which he is best known.”

Dorothy Brett (1883-1976), Deer Hunter, 1967 Estimate: $15/20,000

Another artist to keep in mind is nature and wildlife painter Philip R. Goodwin. “Making for Camp is a great example of his romantic, illustrative approach to scenes of outdoor life and leisure,” says Dreas. “This is a peaceful scene of two hunters nearing the end of their day. The colors are warm and rich, and the viewer can easily sense the relief that comes with the end of the day. This painting evokes the contentment and peacefulness of a summer evening, while still teasing the excitement of tomorrow’s adventure to come.” The piece is expected to fetch $100,000 to $200,000.

Dale Nichols (1904-1995), White Dove of the Desert, 1953, oil on canvas Estimate: $20/30,000

Painted in 1953, White Dove of the Desert (est. $20/30,000) by Dale Nichols is a personal favorite for Dreas. “It is such a beautiful scene, executed in the modernist style for which he is so well-revered,” she says. “However, rather than a Midwestern barn, this painting is undeniably Southwestern, with the desert vegetation, distant mountains and Spanish Mission-style church.”

Dreas also cites Deer Hunterby Taos artist Dorothy Brett. “This painting is filled with color, action, fantasy and narrative—exactly what Brett is known for! [She] has been earning some well-deserved recognition over the past several years, and we are so excited to see the continued enthusiasm for her art on the secondary market.”

Fritz Scholder (1937-2005), Dancers at San Ildefonso, oil on canvas 46 x 72” Estimate: $100/150,000

Hindman will also present an exceptional selection of fine art by important modern and contemporary Native American artists including Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, Earl Biss, Allan Houser, Tony Abeyta and Fritz Scholder. “This sale showcases a truly impressive selection of important Fritz Scholder paintings, all created during his most popular period,” Dreas adds.

Eanger Irving Couse (1866-1936), Mysteries of the Stream, oil on canvas Estimate: $200/300,000

Bidders should also be on the lookout for two iconic Western scenes by G. Harvey Jones and a winter cabin scene by Martin Grelle. Other important Western artists featured in the sale include John Nieto, Gordon Snidow, John DeMott, William Acheff, John Moyers, Wilson Hurley, Ed Mell and an incredible selection of iconic bronzes by Harry Jackson.

The two-day sale takes place November 1 and 2 in Denver, Colorado. —
