Few wildlife artists are as respected today as Bonnie Marris, whose realistic depictions of North American animals have won over countless collectors all around the world.

Marris, who is represented by J Watson Fine Art, has three new pieces available, including Takaya the Wolf That Waits, showing her famous wolf subject matter. “I’ve spent many years studying wolves, the complex way in which they live and socialize with each other,” Marris says. “Takaya means ‘one who watches and waits.’ This painting has a fun composition and she has the expression of patience, strength, wisdom and an aloofness that I so love in wolves.”

In another new work, Winter’s Early Onset, the artist shares some of what inspired her. “I was hiking in Yellowstone in the month of September. I spent a few days photographing a grizzly in beautiful golden grasses and brilliant yellow aspens,” she says. “The next day, I woke to snow. Everywhere! The bison even looked surprised and a bit dismayed. It was all quite beautiful.”
She continues: “The last two years have allowed me to paint for just the pure joy of painting. It’s like you gather up knowledge and, hopefully, skill in technique so you have your very own homemade arsenal when you stare at the blank canvas,” she says.

“Light, shadow, color…I start with more confidence and excitement. I love drama in almost everything, so lighting is usually the inspiration for every piece. The most important aspect of my work is getting the viewer to connect with that animal. I want you to see its heart and soul. I want you to come away knowing and feeling more about that animal than you ever thought possible. When that happens, there is the true inspiration to keep painting.” —
