Pursuit of Passion

The Booth Western Art Museum showcases more than 30 works of art from the Lynn Collection.

A new exhibition at the Booth Western Art Museum features the collection of Steve and Milah Lynn, who developed a deep love for Western art while attending the prestigious Prix de West over the years. Beginning in mid-September, Eye on the Prize: The Steve & Milah Lynn Collectionwill showcase 30 paintings and six sculptures from a number of renowned Western artists. Among them are Walter Matia, Curt Walters, Tucker Smith and Martin Grelle, to name just a few.

Tucker Smith, Early Snow, 2000, oil on canvas, 20 x 24”. Steve and Milah Lynn Collection.

Included in the exhibition is Sherry Sander’s cast bronze sculpture Cougars, depicting two big cats at rest. A number of years ago, Sander had the opportunity to raise a mountain lion, stating that it was a priceless time of study and learning, giving her the rare chance to truly know and love the animal. The artist even wrote a poem describing the piece. One stanza reads:

Two cats, gated by laziness
Supple muscles at rest
Fearless repose, innocuous from interlopers
Breathing hosannas to the Spirits

Walter Matia, Band on the Run, 1999, bronze, 11 x 18 x 7”. Steve and Milah Lynn Collection.

Artist Mike Larsen will have several paintings in the upcoming exhibition, among them a figurative work titled Seen Only Through the Eyes of the Blind. “We knew a young man in our church who was blind from birth,” Larsen says of the piece. “It was often clear that he saw more than us with perfect sight. There are many stories of blind shamans who guided their people because of what they were able to see.”

Sherry Sander, Cougars, 2000, bronze, 18 x 21 x 12”. Steve and Milah Lynn Collection.

In addition, Eye on the Prize will delve into the Lynns’ personal story and the inspiration behind the couple’s “passionate pursuit of Western art. Through informative displays and engaging narratives, visitors will gain insight into the Lynns’ journey as collectors and their profound appreciation for the art form,” notes the Booth Museum.

Martin Grelle, Winter Quest, 2000, oil on canvas, 42 x 52”. Steve and Milah Lynn Collection.

The exhibition will hang from September 23 through January 14, 2024. —
