Artist Focus: Jan Marie De Lipsey

Fresh from winning a top award at the Women Artists of the West’s 53rd National Show, New Mexico artist Jan De Lipsey is as excited as ever to share the splendor of nature. “I love the land,” she says. “I love it all—summer and winter, seedtime and harvest, the mountain peaks, and especially the high deserts and heavens.”

Cedar Shadows, oil, 12 x 12”

Growing up on a ranch in Texas, De Lipsey fell in love with the Western landscape as she explored her world on horseback. After more than 40 years in litigation science and psychology, De Lipsey turned to fine art, and after years of study she gained the skills needed to capture her love of the land on canvases that sparkle with an elegant honesty.

“I’m fascinated by the way elements in a landscape speak to one another,” says De Lipsey. “My journey in art has been about learning to see, and its reward is an understanding of relationships—of how the ‘whole’ of nature is greater than the sum of its parts. I paint because I love it, and I just can’t stop.”

Ancient Beacon, oil, 16 x 20”

An out-of-state member of the California Art Club and a Signature Member of the National Oil and Acrylic Painting Society, De Lipsey has exhibited work across the nation and earned many awards, but her greatest joy is in sharing the landscapes that take her breath away. “I want my love of the land to live in my paintings,” she says. “I want to bring viewers a feeling of reverence for nature’s quiet beauty through the language of color and light.” —
