A stunning selection of material related to the West, along with a particularly strong collection of Southwest artwork, will be offered on November 1 and 2 at the two-session Western & Contemporary Native American Art sale in Denver.
Among some of the top offerings are works from a private collection curated by Janet and Daniel Hidding, who started acquiring artwork in the 1980s. Many of those materials will be offered on November 1. Artists represented in that portion of the sale include Dan Namingha, John Nieto, Fritz Scholder and other top Native American artists.
Dale Nichols (1904-1995), White Dove of the Desert, 1953, oil Estimate: $20/30,000The Scholder painting, Dancers at San Ildefonso, should expect considerable attention since the Luiseño artist’s market is continuously gaining strength as more collectors explore his modern compositions and fields of bright colors. Dancers at San Ildefonso is expected to sell for $100,000 to $150,000. Scholder’s top nine auction records have all been set in the last two years, with his record of $500,000 coming from a Hindman sale in May 2022. The artist’s top 27 auction records have all been set in 2018 or later, proving that interest has been very high in his work.

Philip R. Goodwin (1881-1935), Making for Camp, oil Estimate: $100/200,000
Another potential top lot of the sale is Eanger Irving Couse’s Mysteries of the Stream, estimated at $200,000 to $300,000. “Mysteries of the Stream perfectly encapsulates the ethos of the society and is quintessential Couse, depicting a Native American man and boy perched on a rocky shore intently observing a running stream,” the auction house notes about the piece.
Philip R. Goodwin will have Making for Campin the sale, with estimates of $100,000 to $200,000. The image shows a pair of hunters unloading a canoe, with one of the figures dragging a bundle by a strap and holding a rifle. Goodwin was dear friends with Charles M. Russell, so many collectors see Goodwin and Russell in these famous paintings with two figures.

Eanger Irving Couse (1866-1936), Mysteries of the Stream, oil on canvas Estimate: $200/300,000
Other works include a very stylized Southwest mission painting by Dale Nichols titled White Dove of the Desert (est. $20/30,000), Dorothy Brett’s tall and narrow Deer Hunter (est. $15/20,000), William Acheff’s still life Corn Dancer (est. $8/12,000) and Edmund Henry Osthaus’ sporting scene Three Pointers (est. $8/12,000).

Fritz Scholder (Luiseño, 1937-2005), Dancers at San Ildefonso, oil on canvas 46 x 72” Estimate: $100/150,000
Besides the Scholder painting, other works by Native American artists include John Nieto’s Rancho de Taos Church (est. $15/20,000), Tony Abeyta’s Wind’s Gentle Breeze (est. $6/8,000) and two Allan Houser bronze works, War Pony (est. $15/25,000) and Acorn Harvest (est. $15/25,000). The two November sales in Denver are follow-ups to a September 22 sale held in Cincinnati, which also contained portions of the Hidding collection. Many of those materials in the earlier sale were more historic in nature, while the items in the November sales are more contemporary paintings and bronzes. —
