In the Shadow of Giants, oil, 24 x 30”
One of the great canyon painters in Western art, Dawn Sutherland, connects to art on a deep level that transcends the paint.
“Paintings are more than just a pretty scene. I strive to bring the intangible to a viewer, triggering a memory, a feeling, a longing. I paint to communicate the truth; those scenes that implore me to convey their true beauty, uniqueness, or a small detail that begs to be highlighted,” she says. “It might be a reflection on a rock wall, or a streak of sunlight in a darkened side canyon. Paintings speak in different ways to different individuals and that is the magic of painting. If I lose myself in a painting, I’m almost certain someone will find they feel as though they can walk into the scene I’ve described on canvas.”

Only for a Moment, oil, 24 x 18”
Sutherland has work now available at the Art in the Pines show in Prescott, Arizona. It runs through August 27. She will also have work at the Grand Canyon Celebration of Art from September 9 to 17. —
