In 2021, Brandon Bailey was inducted into the Cowboy Artists of America, whose mission is “to authentically preserve and perpetuate the culture of Western life in fine art.” His painting The Providers depicts two Native American hunters in pursuit of game. Bailey is a member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians.

Sarah Phippen, Summer’s Glow, oil on linen, 24 x 36”

Sarah Phippen will be presenting new work in the show. “I grew up surrounded by livestock and wildlife. Observing their personalities and expressions allowed me to experience their quiet moments or read trouble in their eyes,” she says. “I see this heritage as part of our age-old relationship with animals; it is part of being human, a privilege that surrounds us every day.” Her painting Summer’s Glow, captures the effects of late-afternoon sunlight outlining the forms of the cattle, highlighting the foreground grasses and casting the background into shadow.

Nelson Tucker is experimenting with various black-and-white media, including pen and ink, scratchboard and pencil on paper. His scratchboard rendering, Mute Swan, captures the subtlety of backlighting that outlines the swan’s form as the details of its feathers emerge in the shadow. He says, “I love traditional mediums and also enjoy digital art. I like to experiment; creating is, by definition, learning through experimentation.”

Jared Brady also explores the multiple effects of light. In the painterly abstraction of In the Garden, the bright sunlight washes out the background while the intense color of the roses enlivens the shadows. He says, “There is beauty everywhere I look. The same visual concepts that excite me in a grand vista can also be found in a simple still life. I find that when a subject seems too difficult or out of reach, I gain so much when I push myself to take it on.” —
