Summer in the West

Maxwell Alexander Gallery presents its newest Summer Small Works online show on July 15.

Maxwell Alexander Gallery in Los Angeles carries on a decade-long tradition with its Summer Small Worksexhibition July 15 through 29. Some 100 paintings and sculptures will be shown in the online show and sale.

T. Allen Lawson, Old Fence, New Fence, oil on panel, 16 x 20"

Buying a small work is a way to begin a collection or to fill in a gap in a larger collection. It provides the opportunity to live with something by an artist you like before going on to buy something larger. In any event, it’s always better to acquire a small work of art of high quality than to purchase a large work of low quality.

G. Russell Case, Clouds Over Taos, oil, 16 x 20”

G. Russell Case’s 16-by-20-inch Clouds Over Taos contrasts sunlit fall cottonwoods against dark mountains and rain. Case comments, “I’m attracted to different things in the landscape. Sometimes it can seem chaotic and disorganized. I try to reduce the noise and look for nice color harmonies and positive and negative shapes playing off each other.”

Mick Doellinger, Corriente, bronze, ed. of 28, 13½ x 18 x 10”

Mick Doellinger’s 14-inch-high bronze steer Corrientebears the marks of the artist having modeled the clay before casting it in bronze. Light bounces off the texture, animating the surface. He hopes people will connect with the animals he sculpts, “feeling the essence of the animals.” He adds, “For me, it’s less about creating a perfect replica of the animal, and more about sculpting a narrative or moment in time.”

Michael Klein, Blooming Peonies, oil, 18 x 16”

Living in the Wild West and on the coast of Maine, T. Allen Lawson paints the subtle nuances of the landscape, the visual and visceral experience of a place. In his 16-by-20-inch oil Old Fence, New Fence, he relates a narrative of the history of a place, its long-ago past and its hopeful future. More than half the painting is given to a large patch of snow with texture and slight gradations of color indicating a path.

Joshua LaRock, Kickin’ Up Dust, oil, 12 x 10"

In addition to scenes of the West, the exhibition contains figure paintings and still lifes. Michael Klein’s 18-by-16-inch Blooming Peonies is a symphony in the gradations of white just as Lawson painted his snow-covered path. Carrying on the traditions and techniques of classic realism, Klein paints the effect of actually experiencing the bouquet of peonies in paint—the paint and the painted image having a life and a reality of its own. —
