Artist Focus: Shaun Horne

Devoted to the plein air tradition of landscape painting, Shaun Horne is inspired by one of the great painters of the 20th century.

“I make long-form, large-scale (many session) plein air paintings in a manner taken directly from Rockwell Kent. My inspiration to paint has always been the direct conversation with nature and reality involved in painting what you see,” Horne says. “I look for beautiful landscape, and then paint it with sustained effort. I love letting nature lead me as a painter. The surprises inherent in sustained observation seem infinite.”

New works include Whetstone 5th Season, showing a winding river and mountain peak; Red, Purple, Big Snow, a wintery barn scene; and Aspen Curves, showing gorgeous fall color alongside a dirt road.

“Beyond my interaction with beautiful landscape views, my landscape paintings take as their theme the visible narratives of how geology and humans have marked the land,” Horne says. “My favorite paintings usually describe a small human/big nature balance, but most have some description of the visible relationships between humans and landscape. Those relationships are sort of baked in that I am a human painting landscape.”
