On July 21, nine artists will be featured in Forever West, a new group exhibition at Legacy Gallery’s Canyon Road location in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The all-star lineup is Glenn Dean, Howard Post, G. Russell Case, Bill Anton, Jeremy Winborg, Teresa Elliott, Z.S. Liang, Kyle Polzin, Kim Wiggins and Bryan Haynes.

Jeremy Winborg, Colors of the Desert, oil, 24 x 36”
Offering a taste of the Southwest is Haynes, who will be presenting The Sleepy Burro of Chimayo, which highlights one of the great churches in Northern New Mexico, El Santuario de Chimayo. “We had a neighbor who had this hilarious sleepy burro, Smitty,” Haynes says. “And we used to joke and wonder as we watched him making these pleasant or emotive sounds as he slept there standing in the paddock—what is he dreaming about? It could just be desirous of the most wonderful, kind owner or even something more spiritual. And of course, I absolutely love depicting in any way possible our favorite spot in Chimayo or all of Northern New Mexico, the Santuario de Chimayo.”

G. Russell Case, Desert Squall, oil, 24 x 30”

Z.S. Liang, The Distant Smoke, oil on oinen, 34 x 28”
Liang will be offering his newest work, The Distant Smoke, showing a Native American rider on horseback in harsh afternoon sunlight. “A couple years ago I visited the Crow reservation in Montana, and they were having a horse race,” the artist says. “This horse was so lean and powerful, his skin was showing the most beautiful shine patterns and colors I had ever seen. I asked an Indian man to ride on the horse and looked into the distance. His suspect expression was showing in the body and eyes—‘friend or foe?’”

Bryan Haynes, The Sleepy Burro of Chimayo, acrylic, 24 x 24”
Winborg will also be showing Native American subject matter with his piece Colors of the Desert, a 24-by-36-inch oil. “The desert is one of my favorite places to visit. I especially love the colors on display in the evening,” Winborg says. “The rich orange of the dirt is amplified by the light of the sunset and contrasts perfectly with the lavenders, pinks and blues of the clouds and sky that one finds while visiting the desert. Not only do I love contrasting colors, I also love contrasting textures and styles and this painting incorporates all of those.”
The show kicks off with a reception on July 21, from 5 to 7 p.m. —
