Broadmoor Galleries in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in tandem with the Broadmoor Hotel, is hosting the sixth annual Broadmoor Art Experience. Held every Saturday and Sunday throughout the month of July, the interactive event sees 10 to 20 artists each weekend who embark upon the Broadmoor properties to create new artwork on site. Visitors can experience the magic of observing these works being created in real time, as well as chat directly with the artists.

Participating in this year’s event are nationally recognized artists like Gerald Balciar, Brandon Bailey, Thomas Blackshear II, Veryl Goodnight, Dave LaMure Jr., Sandy Scott, Dustin Van Wechel, Ezra Tucker and many more. Works created on site will be available for purchase.

“The Broadmoor Art Experienceis one of the most exciting times of the year for us. We get to have a huge variety of artists all in one beautiful location,” says Krista Steed-Reyes, gallery director. “It’s more than just a plein air event, it’s a live art experience. You can meet sculptors and see the creative process unfold in front of your eyes through the clay or stone work. Watch how sketches turn into amazing paintings and get to know the person behind the art. Artists and collectors alike enjoy the creative atmosphere.”

Artist Susie Hyer says that one of her favorite aspects of the event is the connection with both artists and patrons. “One of the fun things about it is all the kids who are walking around the grounds with their parents. They are so curious and love to watch artists work. I’ll always ask a kid, ‘Hey, are you an artist too?’ What’s great is that the younger of the kids almost always say yes. If they are a little older, I might even hand them the brush and say, ‘Here, put this stroke down here.’ And I'll usually ask them if they have art classes in school,” she says. “On the personal side, I love being able to talk with the other artists. Painting in the studio is kind of an isolated thing so the opportunity to meet and see other artists and how they work is great for me as well.”

Sarah Woods has been with Broadmoor Galleries since its inception and has participated in the Broadmoor Art Experience from its earliest days. “It began as a true plein air experience, so I enjoyed painting the stunning buildings and grounds of the Broadmoor, and I sought wildlife where I could find it—the koi in the ponds and mule deer and cottontail enjoying the gardens,” she says. “My most memorable experience was painting by the lake when an afternoon storm rolled in and quickly escalated. I wasn’t quick enough as my easel went over, and my painting cartwheeled into the lake! Good news— painting boards float and oil paint is not water soluble. My painting survived and sold the next day.” Woods continues, “As an artist, it’s like a creative infusion to be surrounded by such great talents, sharing memorable meals together and enjoying each other’s company. It is now the biggest part of each July for me, and I can’t wait to get back.”
