Still Here

The Couse-Sharp Historic Site will present an exhibition featuring contemporary artists working in the Spanish Colonial tradition.

Opening June 3 at the Couse-Sharp Historic Site in Taos, New Mexico, is Aún Aquí: Spanish Colonial Contemporary,a new exhibition exploring artwork by Northern New Mexican contemporary artists working in the Spanish Colonial tradition. The exhibition will take place in the historic 1830s Luna Chapel, which was Joseph Henry Sharp’s first Taos studio.

“Aún Aquí” translates into “Still Here,” which provides a foundation for the exhibition that emphasizes that Spanish Colonial artwork, although rooted in the traditions of the past, is still very present in modern-day New Mexico. The exhibition will also highlight the rich history of the region, including when it was first claimed for the Spanish Crown by the conquistador Francisco Vázquez de Coronado in 1540 while he searched for the fabled Cities of Gold.

“Our programming has for the past half dozen years largely reflected [Eanger Irving] Couse’s and Sharp’s focus on Indigenous culture. With the advent of the Lunder Research Center for the Taos Society of Artists, we are now expanding our story and programming to include the local Hispano culture and community,” says Davison Packard Koenig, the museum’s executive director and curator. “We aim for this exhibition to build bridges toward that inclusion.”

The exhibition continues through November 30. For more information visit www.couse-sharp.org. —
