On April 14, the Scottsdale Art Auction will kick off a two-day sale with Session I, featuring 162 works, many of them in lower price tiers that should excite collectors looking for something special.
And although estimates show an affordable range of work, there are also some major pieces that should generate some fireworks, including G. Harvey’s Snow Melts Into Spring (est. $45/65,000), Roy Andersen’s Sweet Medicine Chief (est. $25/35,000), Joe Beeler’s Entering the Stronghold (est. $35/50,000) and an incredibly strong Logan Maxwell Hagege painting, The Guide(est. $50/75,000), that shows several of the artist’s most iconic subjects.

Joe Beeler (1931-2006), Entering the Stronghold, oil, 30 x 48” Estimate: $35/50,000
The sale will also have a number of works from lesser-known artists whose works should delight first-time collectors. Some of these artists include Chuck Ren, Morris Rippel, Mort Künstler, Joe Grandee, bronze artist Truman Bolinger and Carlos Hall, a New Mexico painter who had a contemporary style and a versatile palette.

Ed Mell, Storm Beyond the Rim, oil, 18 x 28” Estimate: $15/20,000
A major Z.S. Liang painting will be offered, The White Buffalo War Shield, estimated at $70,000 to $100,000. The painting was the subject of a Western Art Collector feature in June 2019. One of the preliminary drawings for the painting will also be offered with the final oil work.
Other works being offered in the sale include a series of Tom Lovell oil studies, a number of Dave McGary bronzes, a handful of works from Michael Coleman, four stunning Ed Mell landscapes, five Ray Swanson paintings showing modern Navajo people in various settings and four paintings from R. Brownell McGrew.

Charlie Dye will have several exceptional illustration works from his time working on the East Coast before he moved West to become a cowboy artist. The paintings, all from the Golden Age of Illustration, show classic and often playful American subjects, from scientists tinkering with new concoctions to ice skaters trying to get the attention of a beautiful subject. One of his Western works is Lonely Heart, showing an old cowboy admiring a letter as he leans over his mailbox. The man’s horse rests against his shoulder, as if the horse is reading the letter and admiring a picture that had been slipped in the envelope. The work is estimated at $3,000 to $5,000.

Bruce Greene, From the Top of Dutch Canyon, oil, 24 x 48” Estimate: $7/10,000
Another strong work is Tom Ryan’s predicament painting Trouble at the Creek (est. $8/12,000), which shows a bison tormenting a figure that is hanging precariously from a tree.
