Barbara Meikle is passionate about animals as art subjects. But her passion does not end at the easel.
“One of my major influences is raising money for animal rescue, in particular for horse and donkey rescue. I have been drawing and painting equines since I was a child and now I find as much inspiration in raising money for people who save them as I do painting and sculpting them,” she says. “I have several rescue equines, two are horses and one is a mini mule, and I feel so lucky that they are such wonderful characters, beautiful inside and out. My artwork reflects that in the way I use color to portray the personalities of the horse or the donkey or other animals that I paint. We also raise money for our local Wildlife Center and we have live animal events at the gallery several times a year. One of my favorite events is the donkey event.”

On July 8, Meikle will have animals Penelope and Marley visit the gallery, where she will paint them while they pose. The paintings will be sold right off the easel. In addition to the original work, the artist will also do a print release, both framed and unframed, that benefits her favorite animal rescue groups.

“Not only is it so gratifying to help these animal rescues but it deepens my connection with the animals that I get to paint and sculpt,” she adds. “The other bonus is that my collectors become involved and just as passionate about the animals as I am. I always tell them that when they purchase something from my gallery, ‘You’re a part of a bigger circle now. Some of the money that you’re spending will go to fix a broken wing, feed a hungry donkey or save a horse from slaughter.’”
The July 8 event will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at her gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico. —
