For passionate Western art fans, the Out West Art Show & Sale is one of highlights of Western Art Week in Great Falls, Montana. The annual show, hosted at the Heritage Inn, features more than 70 of the top artists working in the genre today—all presented in an intimate format, with artists at their booths ready to discuss their original works of art.

I love painting wildlife, landscapes and the long-dead heroes of the West,” says participating artist Sarah Boston, who works in pastel, oil, graphite and colored pencil. “My favorite challenge is to bring early photographs back to life with color and detail, which often starts with days of research to be historically and culturally accurate.”

Also participating in the 2023 Out West Art Show is multi-faceted artist Ron Ukrainetz. “I have always been attracted by how light and shadows play on any subject. No matter the media I choose, the challenges are as varied as the shapes it affects,” he says. “I also feel each piece should tell a story, whether it is historical, dramatic lighting or softer emotional attachment. If I can meet one or all of those personal criteria, then it’s been a good day.”

The Out West Art Show & Sale opens Thursday, March 16, and runs from 5 to 9 p.m. An opening reception with food and live music takes place 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. On Friday, March 17, the show runs from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., including a quickdraw at 5:30 p.m. followed by an auction one hour later. Saturday, March 18, has the same show hours, with a quick-finish event at 5:30 p.m. and an auction to follow at 6:30 p.m. —
