Artist Focus: Shirley Quaid

A closer look at the artwork of Shirley Quaid

Award-winning artist Shirley Quaid was born and raised in Oklahoma and still resides in a rural area in the south-central part of the state where she works in her “dream studio” nearly every day.

Having started painting 22 years ago, Quaid first explored watercolor and acrylic paints before settling on oils as her preferred medium. “I love the way oil paint feels,” she says. “The flow of the paint is much smoother and allows me to be more expressive.”Board Meeting, oil, 16 x 20”

Jebediah, oil, 24 x 12”Quaid has created a variety of works that depict scenes from the Old West. “I’m not a portrait painter, but I like to paint people,” she says. “I feel most people from the Old West were survivors. I like to paint the expressions and emotions of those people. I work with models and I make sure they are historically accurate to the late 1800s, making sure the clothes they’re wearing and the guns they’re carrying are authentic and believable. I like to paint many of the ‘common’ folk of the Old West. Not the usually well-known figures, but the everyday people. It’s important that the portrayals be true to the people of the time.”Wanted!, oil, 16 x 20”When asked what she hopes viewers get from her paintings, the artist states, “I believe people can connect with the characters in my paintings on an emotional level, even though they’re from a different time, because many of the situations are the same. I think people can see themselves, or someone they may be close to in my paintings.” —
