Going Big

Andy Mast pencil works to be projected onto a building in Denver for the annual stock show.

During the famous National Western Stock Show in January, pencil works by Andy Mast will be projected onto the side of the Daniels & Fisher Tower, a 20-story clock tower in Denver. “Passion is real and dreams do come true,” the artist says about the honor of having his work chosen. The projection project, titled Peace in Solitude, will allow Mast to unveil his work and career to a wider audience. Coming from a humble Amish upbringing, Mast had a severe setback at the age of 17 years old when a horse-related injury left him with a traumatic brain injury. It took a five-year journey to overcome the injury, and throughout that journey, he used drawing as a sanctuary. Today he is exhibiting at Western shows around the country and his work is entering more and more collections. Drawings by Andy Mast will be projected onto the side of the historic Daniels & Fisher Tower during the National Western Stock Show in Denver.“Graphite pencil may not be viewed as the most popular fine art medium in Western art, [but] I’ve always dreamed of taking pencil to new heights. I could not be more honored than to be considered in this modern venue, and be a part of the Denver skyline during the stock show,” Mast says. “In today’s world, ‘Quietness is Beautiful.’ In quietness and solitude I draw best. It’s the ‘small and simple’ things—the Western traditions, the ways of life and families that inspire me. I hope that my drawings remind people of the beauty all around us and of a simpler time. It is my wish that my work may bring hope to people and bring them closer to their own inner quietness. The Peace in Solitude exhibition not only promotes peace, quietness and hope, in which we are so deprived of today, but it’s also a special opportunity to pay tribute to the dear people of influence around me who mean so much. They have known quietness, in solitude, in a small genuine community. They live simply, peacefully and work hard in small-town rural America, those who value Western traditions, spirit and family.”

Digital designer Robin Sweet brought the pencil works to the finished projection. “It was an honor to work with Andy and create the digital exhibition illustrating his vision for his pencil work on the tower,” Sweet says. “We had to overcome not only the challenge of the unique perspective of the tower, but how to best move and fit the artwork in the frame, while maintaining the true spirit of solitude. The stunning detail and wide value range indicative of Andy’s work are beautifully rendered through Night Lights Denver’s projection technology.” —
