The Dynamic West

Legacy Gallery’s 23rd Annual Holiday Small Works Show returns this December, showcasing an astounding 150-plus works of art.

Legacy Gallery’s 23rd Annual Holiday Small Works Show returns this December, showcasing an astounding 150-plus works of art—with paintings measuring around 12 by 16 inches and sculptures at a height of approximately 13 inches. These smaller-scale pieces offer versatility for the discerning collector looking to sprinkle something new into their collection, as well as new collectors searching for potentially more affordable price points.Jeremy Winborg, Light Pace and a Fierce Heart, oil, 11 x 17"

Michael Ome Untiedt, Study, Mollie’s Return, oil, 11 x 14”

Artwork in the show ranges from dynamic scenes of Native Americans on horseback, to florals, wilderness scenes and landscapes emblematic of the Southwest.

David Mann’s glowy, blue nocturne features two riders on horseback approaching a cabin in the distance. “I’m always inspired by moonlight—because it’s so beautiful and mysterious, especially on a snowy landscape,” he says. “In a world filled with cool blues there is a glowing warm light from a cabin window. The warmth of the fire and the shelter of the cabin draws us to it like a magnet, but we can’t go there because these are not our people. They may be our new neighbors, but they are not our people.”David Mann, New Neighbors, oil, 9 x 12"

Jeremy Winborg generates electrifying energy in his oil Light Pace and a Fierce Heart, with his subject matter of a girl racing on a horse, poised to release her arrow, as well as the wild expression of his brushstrokes. “This little oil painting measures only 11¼ by 17 inches, but it still contains all the excitement and intensity of a large painting, just in a scaled down size,” Winborg says. “I always try to bring strong emotion into my work along with an interesting juxtaposition between realism and abstraction (which is actually harder to do in a small painting than in a big one!). I think this painting was successful in bringing all of these elements together to create a work that can be enjoyed for a lifetime.”G. Russell Case, Clouds and Desert, oil, 12 x 16"

Hidden Jewel, an oil by Cindy Baron, comes from a love of the outdoors and hiking. “The mystery of what you might see is always intriguing to me,” she says. “Hidden Jewel is appropriately named. When you come across a stream, waterfall or the lighting in the atmosphere, this is what inspires every artist to smile and create…The atmosphere in this painting was heavy with humidity and lush in color, so it made it easy to remember in the studio when plein air cannot be done. When you learn how to capture in your mind what makes you tick, it makes it easy to take home.”Cindy Baron, Hidden Jewel, oil, 16 x 8”

Charles Fritz, Spring Fever, oil, 10 x 18”Charles Fritz says of his painting Spring Fever: “On numerous occasions I have been privileged to be on the Apsáalooke (Crow) reservation in Montana where I’ve witnessed the horsemanship of their boys and young men. They jump up on anything that will take a bit and fearlessly dash about in informal races. They are so comfortable and competent riding bareback and the exuberance they, and their mounts, display is flat-out contagious!”

An artist reception will be held at the Scottsdale, Arizona, gallery on December 8 from 6 to 8 p.m. All works in the exhibition will be sold by a fixed-price draw. —
