Montana Museum of Art & Culture: Nick Eggenhofer

The Montana Museum of Art & Culture at the University of Montana recently acquired 125 Western works of art. The collection comes from the Stan and Donna Goodbar Collection, much of which will be on view in an exhibition opening early next year.

Imagining the West: Selections from the Stan and Donna Goodbar Collection of Western Art opens February 4, 2023, and continues through May 27 at the museum in Missoula, Montana. Nick Eggenhofer (1897-1985), Cowboy Surrendering, dry brush. “This collection reveals how artists interpreted the West during the 20th century. MMAC is proud to present a selection of these works featuring artists who made a living primarily as illustrators, both shaping and reinforcing quintessential myths about the West’s important archetypes, its settlers, cowboys and Indigenous inhabitants,” the museum notes.

Artworks in the collection include pieces by celebrated Montana artists such as Ace Powell, Elizabeth Lochrie, John Clarke, Joe De Yong, Charles M. Russell and O.C. Seltzer, among others. The collection also contains works from artists outside of Montana, such as Edward Borein, Will James and Olaf Wieghorst.

One piece from the collection is Nick Eggenhofer’s dry brush piece Cowboy Surrendering
