Qualities of Light

Approximately 50 works of art will be on show for nearly the entire month of December at Mountain Trails Gallery

Approximately 50 works of art, including painting, sculpture, mixed media and more, will be on show for nearly the entire month of December at Mountain Trails Gallery during Treasures and Objects of Delight.

“This holiday exhibition is a festive gathering of Treasures and Objects of Delight by a group of award-winning traditional and contemporary artists,” says Julie R. Williams, director of Mountain Trails Gallery in Sedona, Arizona. “From masterful paintings of objects to delightful treasures in bronze, many of these artists surprise us with something special.”Susanne Nyberg, Apache Flowers, oil, 10 x 8”Among the artwork in the show is Marcia Molnar’s Acapella, a square composition of buffalo grazing beneath complementary yellow, pink and purple hues. “Grand Canyon, Sedona, Vermilion Cliffs are always an inspiration. Throw in a sunset, a storm, a river or creek, and I will always find a painting waiting to be created,” says the artist.Linda Glover Gooch, The Golden Hour, oil, 9 x 12”“I’m in love with the beautiful desert light on the rugged Arizona mountains…Because this light doesn’t last very long, it seems magical and special,” says Susanne Nyberg. “I am particularly enchanted with the light and colors of Sedona…With the addition of the sunset light splashed over the rich colors of the rock formations, it creates a wonderful gemlike effect over the landscape. That’s what inspires me to paint.” Her thick, impasto painting Apache Flowers captures this quality of light. “Fortunately, I can paint fast enough to capture these fleeting moments of grandeur because I use palette knives and oils. The oils don’t dry quickly in the desert air…[but] I can only paint out on location for a half an hour to about an hour before the light has changed completely…In my studio the next day I make any corrections and put on the finishing touches, being careful not to overwork it and kill the excitement with which it was painted.”Marcia Molnar, Acapella, oil, 30 x 30"

Jean Hildebrant, Living Water, oil, 24 x 30”

Another painting fueled by elements of light is Linda Glover Gooch’s oil The Golden Hour.  “[This piece] was inspired by the beautiful warmth that spread across the horizon as the sun was setting. I was attracted to the contrast of the deep blue sky complementing the sunset display; to me, it was one of those awe moments. I’ve found over the years that sunsets have a way of doing that, quieting the soul and making one sit in silence and awe.”

Treasures and Objects of Delight opens on December 2, with a reception from 4 to 7 p.m., and runs through the rest of the month. —
