A closer look at the art of Charles Muench

Charles Muench is an artist living in between the Sierra mountains and the high plains desert of Nevada.

“I believe to create good paintings and develop as an artist it is essential that you listen to nature,” Muench says. “The result of this dialogue is a distillation of everything that is before you into a statement of heightened reality. Through a contemplative interaction with your subject, you create something that is truly independent of yourself and nature-art.”Lily Lake Summer, oil on linen, 16 x 12”His painting, Nevada, is an orchestration of accumulated visual experience inspired by his 13 years of exploring northern Nevada. It took more than a year for Muench to transform his emotions and experiences into pigment and canvas. Simply titled Nevada, it represents the subtle beauty of the state. Understanding this beauty requires patience and a willingness to stop and listen to the land.Autumn Orchestration, Parker Lake, oil on linen, 36 x 48”

Muench’s paintings often require returning to the same spot again and again, waiting for the right balance of color and light. Autumn Orchestration, Parker Lake is the result of this dogged determination to express the true essence of a place, not just visual data gathered on one indiscriminate day. He first hiked to this lake in 1995 and has returned often to listen and learn. This painting is a distillation of having visited this magical part of the eastern Sierra over 25 years. It is his definitive expression of Parker Lake. —
