Birthday Bash

Maxwell Alexander Gallery celebrates 10 years in business with a huge show and party in Los Angeles.

In 2012, Logan Maxwell Hegege, then one of the top young artists rising through the ranks of Western art, started a gallery with his brother, Beau Alexander. Their aim was to show the best art on the market, but there was also a twist: “We wanted to do it differently,” Hagege says.Ten years later and Maxwell Alexander Gallery has not only survived but also thrived. The gallery celebrated its first decade in the art world with a massive show and party from October 14 through 16 in Los Angeles.Brett Allen Johnson, Behind Them a Flame, oil, 40 x 70”Hundreds of collectors and dozens of artists came out for the 10-year bash, with the sale bringing in more than $1 million in sales. Alexander not only encouraged his artists to bring their best work, but also large pieces that would make a statement about the gallery and its artwork. A number of artists followed through, including Glenn Dean, Hagege, Ed Mell, Josh Elliott, John Moyers, Terri Kelly Moyers, G. Russell Case and many others who brought large works.Collectors and artists mingle during the 10th anniversary show at Maxwell Alexander Gallery in Los Angeles.Certainly one of the key highlights of the sale was Brett Allen Johnson’s 70-inch-wide painting Behind Them a Flame, which was widely praised in the room by artists and collectors. In addition to a number of great Western painters, the gallery also represents prominent contemporary artists such as Jeremy Mann, David Kassan, Serge Marshennikov, Joseph Todorovitch, Susan Lyon and Michael Klein, many of them in attendance during the show. After the events in Los Angeles, collectors and artists were invited to Hagege’s studio in nearby Ojai, California, where guests were given a studio tour and offered a drawing demonstration by the artist. Hagege showed how he develops small thumbnail images into larger drawings that can eventually turn into ideas for larger paintings. Guests were also treated to a sneak peek of a new painting on the easel. —
