Thriving Market

Hindman presents major works from many categories in the Western & Contemporary Native American Art Sale.

On November 1, Hindman will offer a huge selection of artwork to bidders in its Western & Contemporary Native American Art Sale taking place in Denver.

“We’re excited about this one because we have some incredible works, but also because the last few years we’ve been elevating these premier sales with high-caliber, high-quality artwork,” says Alexandria Dreas, Hindman associate specialist and head of sales. “With this particular sale, we have top-notch material in a variety of genres and categories.” Martin Grelle, Late Autumn Gather, 1991, oil on canvas, 30 x 40” Estimate: $30/50,000

One of the noteworthy works in the November sale is Joseph Henry Sharp’s beautiful fall forest scene Where the Deer Come, which shows a Native American figure sitting among large rocks at the edge of a thick grouping of cottonwoods. “It’s just a really beautiful Sharp, and we have two others and all are very strong paintings. The fall color is brilliant here,” says Dreas. “The provenance of this work includes Forrest Fenn’s gallery in Santa Fe. After it was sold there, it stayed in a family’s collection until now.” The work is estimated at $80,000 to $120,000.Joseph Henry Sharp (1859-1953), Where the Deer Come, oil on board, 16 x 20” Estimate: $80/120,000

Other historic works in the sale are Albert Bierstadt’s small painting The Mountain Top at Sunset, Western Landscape, estimated at $8,000 to $12,000, and Frederic Remington’s 1888 oil on board, The Buck Overtaken, which was originally painted for Theodore Roosevelt’s 1888 book Ranch Life and the Hunting-Trail. The piece, which is listed in the Remington catalogue raisonné as work No. 229, is estimated to sell for $20,000 to $30,000. The Bierstadt work is unsigned, but the lot is accompanied with a strong letter of confidence from a Bierstadt expert, and it’s in Bierstadt’s digital catalogue raisonné.G. Russell Case, Toward Crooked Mesa, 2010, oil on board, 20 x 40” Estimate: $8/12,000

More contemporary works in the sale include Martin Grelle’s 1991 cowboy painting Late Autumn Gather, estimated at $30,000 to $50,000, and G. Russell Case’s Maynard Dixon-esque landscape with cattle and clouds titled Toward Crooked Mesa, estimated at $8,000 to $12,000. “The Case painting originated at the 2010 Coors [Western Art Exhibit & Sale] and has been in a private collection ever since,” Dreas says. “It has brilliant color and is one of my favorite works in the sale.”Fritz Scholder (1937-2005), Horse and Rider, acrylic on canvas, 80 x 68” Estimate: $80/120,000

Eleven Fritz Scholder works will be in the sale, offering further proof that his market is exceptionally hot right now as his pieces break records and sell way over auction estimates. Hindman will be offering Scholder’s Horse and Rider, an 80-inch-tall acrylic on canvas with an orange sky and a strong central form.

Other works include an Adolf Alexander Weinman bronze and a David Shepherd wildlife image.

On November 2, following the live sale on November 1, Hindman will hold an online-only sale to complement this auction. For more information visit the website. —
