John Cook Western painting wins at OPA
The Oil Painters of America recently awarded painter John Cook a gold medal for his painting Rejuvenation 2.0. The 24-by-36-inch painting shows two cowboys asleep on the ground, their hats pressed forward to offer some shade from the sun. The award was part of the 2022 Western Regional Exhibition. After the piece won the award it quickly sold. The OPA, while not known as specifically a Western organization, does draw in interest from Western artists and collectors.

Forrest Fenn Collection sells at Hindman
Hindman has held two sales with highlights from the collection of Forrest Fenn, the prominent Santa Fe art dealer. The second one, held September 8, included a Southern Cheyenne painted hide shield, from the late-19th century. The cover is made from softly tanned thin hide cover painted in colors of yellow, red, black and green and depicting a battle scene. The center image features a galloping stallion and Cheyenne warrior with lance, with the warrior wearing a long feathered headdress and holding a shield. The 15-inch work was estimated at $40,000 to $60,000, and sold within estimates at $53,125.
