November 2022 Edition

Museum and Event Previews

Small & Great

The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum hosts the 17th edition of its popular fall exhibition and sale.

Opening November 5 at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City is the 17th annual Small Works, Great Wonders exhibition that will highlight small paintings, drawings and sculptures. The popular show is a favorite within the Western art world. JoAnn Peralta, Sun Sisters, oil, 16 x 20”

Small Works, Great Wonders is such a fun blend of traditional and contemporary smaller-scale works that are great for beginners as well as more seasoned collectors,” said Natalie Shirley, president and CEO at the Oklahoma museum. “The quality and affordability of the art makes this one of the museum’s most anticipated annual events, and a portion of each sale directly supports the important education programs here at the museum.”Huihan Liu, A Sacred Voice, oil on linen, 12 x 16”

Brad Price, Placitas Church, oil on canvas, 16 x 20”

More than 200 artworks will be available at this year’s event. The show opens on November 5, but the date collectors need to note is November 11, which is when the museum will host the fixed-price, by-draw sale. Unlike the museum’s Prix de West sale held in June, Small Works, Great Wonders has an incentive for buying art the night of the sale: winning bidders get to take the work home that night, as opposed to waiting until the end of the exhibition. This year bidders will be able to bid using the museum’s Western Heritage app. Absentee bidding will also be offered.

Artists in this year’s exhibition include Lee Andre, Brad Price, Kenny McKenna, Huihan Liu and JoAnn Peralta, who will be showing two works, Early Riders and Sun SistersLee Andre, Study for ‘Two Ravens,’ charcoal on panel, 11 x 20”

“The sibling bond between sisters knows no boundaries, and crosses cultural lines. These Native American sisters are finding warmth as the sun begins to set, and wrapped in a shawl, find comfort in their closeness,” says Peralta about Sun Sisters. “I love to paint relationships that the viewer can connect to in their own experiences. Every time I do an original work of art, I view it as a one-of-a-kind image regardless of its size. Miniatures are treated with the same quality of concept to finish as an epic-sized work of mine would be.”Kenny McKenna, First Light (North Rim of the Grand Canyon), oil, 12 x 20”

Any unsold works after November 11 will hang in the museum until November 27. Unsold artwork will remain available for purchase up through the last day of the exhibition. —
