Celebration of the Century

Clark Hulings to be honored in Santa Fe on what would have been his 100th birthday.

Fans and collectors of Clark Hulings are invited to celebrate the artist’s life and career at a party marking what would have been his 100th birthday. The event, hosted by the Clark Hulings Foundation, will take place at the La Fonda on the Plaza, which will also be celebrating its centennial in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Hulings moved to Santa Fe in 1972 and it remained his home until he died in 2011. Clark Hulings in Venice, Italy, in an undated photo.

“Clark Hulings’ paintings, whether visions from Europe, North Africa or the Americas, have immersed us in exquisitely realistic portrayals of life since he first put brush to canvas in the 1950s,” the foundation that bears his name notes. “With the skill of an 18th-century master, and 20th-century eloquence, Hulings captures the people’s labors, domestic lives, and street cultures from the mid-20th to early-21st centuries. He reveals them as if to remind us how utterly we depend on the natural rhythms of life’s endeavors and are served by the nobility of our shared human spirit.”Clark Hulings (1922-2011), Ringing Bell (Nuestra Señora de la Salud), oil, 30 x 25”

Visitors to the event will be welcomed to the hotel by a donkey named Rosita—Hulings used a donkey as a logo for many of his books and other projects—and one of the artist’s favored martinis, while mingling with Hulings’ family members, writers, collectors, curators, gallerists and working artists gathered on the hotel’s La Terraza & Garden Terrace. Clark Hulings (1922-2011), Santa Fe Corner, oil, 24 x 30”

Other events at the celebration include a silent auction, a demo of a virtual reality exhibition and demonstrations from five Santa Fe artists—Lee Rommel, McCreary Jordan, Katherine Stedham, Brad Smith and Ric Dentinger—as they complete paintings to be sold off their easels. There will also be a dinner, a video presentation and a virtual ribbon cutting from Booth Western Art Museum director Seth Hopkins, who will be launching the Booth’s Clark Hulings Virtual Reality Exhibition. All guests at the special evening will receive a collectible NFT commemorative featuring Hulings’ original donkey and cart and the Hulings Centennial Logo.Clark Hulings (1922-2011), The Pink Parasol, oil, 31 x 40”The Clark Hulings Foundation is an active organization, both for Clark Hulings the artist and for artists in general. The foundation strives to teach artists, empower them within the market and bring technolohy and innovation to the world of art. The organization started in 2013, just two years after Hulings died.
