Artist Focus: Bill Nebeker

A closer look at the sculpture of Bill Nebeker

Sculptor Bill Nebeker’s inspiration has come mostly from the working American rancher and cowboy. “Since my ancestors and I have lived this way of life, I admire the cultural aspects of their work ethic, principles, integrity and want to tell those stories in my sculptures,” the Arizona artist says. “I create authentic historic or contemporary detailed depictions of the subjects I chose to sculpt. Whether I choose to portray a modern-day cowboy gathering cattle along a hot, dusty, desert trail, or a frontier settler from long ago coming over a snowy-cold mountain pass to raise cattle out in the wilderness, I want my viewer to see, feel and imagine the tension and atmosphere.”Made Mama Mad, bronze, 24 x 25 x 16”

Long Arm of the Law, bronze, 17 x 17 x 8”Nebeker, who is a longtime member of the Cowboy Artists of America, adds, “Sculpting action and movement of horses, cattle and cowhands brings more life to each story. To me, what saddles and equipment are used and even what hat, boots or clothing they wear also adds interest to the piece. Realism is my chosen style because the ranching men and women I personally know believe that when they give their word, it is their bond, and they appreciate and deserve that I depict their work, gear and lifestyle accurately with dignity and respect. I hope those who see my sculptures, can know that in whatever era I have portrayed these men and women they looked, dressed and lived just as it appears in my sculpture. I believe I am not only an artist, but in many ways I am a historian and a commentator on contemporary ranching/cowboy life.”The Measure of A Man, bronze,36 x 15 x 10”

Nebeker will next have his work shown at the Cowboy Artists of America annual show at the Will Roger Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas, on November 4 and 5. He will also show at the Mountain Oyster Western Art Show in Tucson, Arizona, on November 19 and 20. —
