Painter Naomi Brown has been experimenting in exciting directions within her studio. “Lately I have been drawn to saturated, warm colors of the Southwest deserts of California and Arizona,” Browns says. “I have been really having fun with working on paintings that take me under 12 hours to complete from start to finish. Working with these alla prima paintings has its challenges when working wet on wet oil paint.”

The artist says it takes dedication and a game plan to complete one these paintings, especially when they are larger like the 24-by-36-inch Burning Sky Joshua Tree. The work is still available at Cowgirl Up! Art From the Other Half of the West at the Desert Caballeros Western Museum in Wickenburg, Arizona.
“I love the challenge of knowing I have a small window of opportunity to let the paint magically work together while wet,” she continues. “I use just oil from the tube and mineral spirits to paint these alla prima paintings. When I paint my alla prima paintings I usually start with a few lines to give me guidelines for my subject, and sometimes I start with a blank, white canvas. It pushes my creative side as an artist. It allows me to break away from the rules and structure of my other paintings. It feels sometimes like I am running a marathon, but
I love the raw, different feeling these paintings have. It’s capturing my subject in a very different way.”
