Arizona painter and sculptor John Coleman will be unveiling his newest batch of work at a solo show opening October 8 at InSight Gallery in Fredericksburg, Texas. The still-untitled show will feature 10 new works from the prominent artist, whose last two shows in Scottsdale, Arizona, were huge milestones in the Western art market.
The show will feature a mixture of paintings, drawings and new bronze works, including a sculpture of Crazy Horse. “The point for me is to have some balance among all the work, from drawing, painting and the sculptures,” Coleman says. “I also try to have a mixture of men, some women and then also some children as well. It provides that balance that I want.”

For several of the larger works on paper, Coleman is not only working large, but even larger than life with 64-inch-tall drawings showing meticulous detail. In one of the drawings, Mandan Chief Four Bears, Coleman allows light to dance amid his marks, with rich shadows playing against bright highlights. “It all goes back to balance again,” he says. “That detail in the face is really key, because without it, the rest kind of falls apart.”
One of the new oils is Society Sister, showing a young girl decked out in various necklaces and other items as she sits in an interior scene.
An opening reception for the show will take place October 7, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The following day, October 8, Coleman will give a lecture on the historical reference he uses while preparing a work of art. Also on October 8 will be the collector’s event and by-draw sale. RSVPs are required for the sale portion of the event. For more information visit www.insightgallery.com. —
