Painter Leah Lucas unveils new work
Fresh off the easel at Leah Lucas’ studio is this cowboy work titled “…Think you lost your shoe along here.”  She says of the piece: “It is reminiscent of my days riding on the ranch. I wanted to evoke the feeling of space—the kind of space you can only get on the open range. Although the horse and cowboy insist on being in the foreground, they are set against the wildness, the expansiveness and the clarity of a crisp winter day. The cowboy and his horse have been down this road before—you can feel the patience and the respect they have for each other. And neither of them is in too much of a hurry for the afternoon to end. Almost as though it would be OK if they missed supper.” Lucas’ work shows at Bryans Gallery in Taos, New Mexico, and can be seen at www.leahlucasfineart.com.

New carvings available from Don Woodard
Don Woodard’s newest carving should thrill Western collectors, with its string of horses pulling through a forest. Working bas relief, Woodard carves his images into a flat piece of wood and then paints them to bring the scene to life. “This artwork depicts a scene that actually took place last summer,” the artist says. “The owner of a ranch that I have been working with for many years called and asked if I could lead four gentlemen into a wilderness fishing camp. His only available wrangler, a lady named Grace, and I led the guys on a four-and-a-half-hour horse ride into the designated camp site, then helped the men set up camp. They guys didn’t want to keep their horses during their week stay, so she and I had to bring the nine horses back through the wilderness, another four-hour ride, back to the ranch. While most all the horses would walk to the right of a tree, we had one horse that consistently wanted to go to the left of a tree. Needless to say, it caused quite a problem!” For more information visit www.donwoodard.com.
