Forever West

Five artists unveil new work at Legacy Gallery’s new Santa Fe location.

This August, Legacy Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, will bring together five prominent artists in a show that celebrates the landscape and culture of the West. “Together they capture the emotion of the environments, communities and peoples they paint,” the gallery says. Howard Post, The Inspection, oil, 36 x 48"

G. Russell Case will be showing several landscapes, including Clouds and Cows, a desert scene with a low horizon and cows grazing in the foreground. He says, “This is what I really have a feel for when I’m out in the desert a lot. It’s a quiet, serene, big sky desert.”

Another work from Case is October in New Mexico, which features trees fading to yellow as the warm months come to a close. “I think Northern New Mexico is one of the greatest places to be in autumn,” Case says. “Against the desert background, with the cottonwoods that run through the valley of Taos, just being in New Mexico in the autumn is really something special.” Glenn Dean, Catching the Rest of the Sun, oil, 25 x 20"

He hopes that his work will encourage viewers to remember back to Taos’s early years as an art colony.

“I want to keep alive the feeling of old Taos, when artists like Blumenschein were still there,” he says.

Paintings from Howard Post get up close and personal with their animal subjects. “The Inspection is an example of my longtime fascination with animals as they are gathered in the holding pens or corrals,” he says. In the painting, rodeo cattle are crowded together in a pen, waiting for contestants to come check them out before the competition begins. G. Also on view will be Glenn Dean’s Catching the Rest of the Sun. The painting features two figures on horseback, riding up a path under a pink and gold desert sunset.

Forever West will also feature the work of Bill Anton and Jeremy Lipking. It runs from August 10 through 14, with an opening on Friday, August 10, from 5 to 7 p.m. —
