The Great Outdoors

Sporting and Western art are the stars of Copley’s summer sale in Massachusetts.

Copley Fine Art Auctions will present the popular Sporting Sale on July 14 and 15, during which the auction house will offer a diverse mixture of sporting and Western art in Hingham, Massachusetts. Bob Kuhn (1920-2007), Wild Chorus, acrylic on board, 14 x 30” Estimate: $60/80,000.

The annual sale is known for sporting art in all its forms, but pays special attention to bird decoys, a specialty at the auction house. This year’s sale will feature a stunning example, the Harmon Hollow Nantucket Curlew, a 16-inch-long decoy from around 1850. The decoy, which straddles both sporting art and Americana, is estimated at $150,000 to $250,000.The Harmon Hollow Nantucket Curlew, ca. 1850, 16” long   Estimate: $150/250,000

In the area of paintings and bronzes, the sale will present a number of exceptional pieces. “In addition to the important estates and private collections, several notable individual works have been consigned to this sale. Aiden Lassell Ripley’s watercolor of grouse shooting will be on offer. This iconic watercolor was commissioned by Field & Stream in 1946 as part of their Gunning in America series and is one of the artist’s most celebrated works,” says Copley principal Stephen O’Brien Jr. “The exceedingly rare Gorham foundry bronze Chief Washaki - Shoshone by Cyrus Dallin relates closely to his monumental Appeal to the Great Spirit that adorns in the south lawn of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait’s Steady, depicting two setters pointing quail, is notable for its composition and sublime condition.”Cyrus Dallin (1861-1944), Chief Washaki - Shoshone, bronze, 41½ x 35 x 18” Estimate: $100/150,000

In addition to the Ripley (est. $50/70,000) and the Dallin (est. $100/150,000), the Sporting Sale will also offer Bob Kuhn’s Wild Chorus (est. $60/80,000), an African scene with two lions; Edmund Henry Osthaus’ Setter Puppies (est. $60/90,000); and George Browne’s Mallards Gleaning the Stubble (est. $30/50,000). Edmund Henry Osthaus (1858-1928), Setter Puppies, oil on canvas, 18 x 36” Estimate: $60/90,000

Other artists represented in the sale include Ogden M. Pleissner, Frank Leyendecker, A.B. Frost, Frank W. Benson, Emile Gruppe, Luke Frazier, William Matthews, Carl Rungius and Bob Abbett.

To entice bidders, a number of lots will have no reserves or estimates, which should provide some exciting bidding. —
