The Art of Excellence

Nedra Matteucci Galleries celebrates its 50-year legacy with an exhibition of its exceptional trove of contemporary and historic Western art.

When Nedra Matteucci Galleries opened its doors in 1972, it was already destined for distinction. After all, its first owner was Forrest Fenn, the eccentric art dealer who many decades later became famous for inspiring thousands to embark upon a quest to find his hidden treasure. The historical architecture of Nedra Matteucci Galleries is an ideal canvas for showcasing regional art

Comprised of several historic buildings, situated on nearly two acres enclosed with earthy, stone and adobe walls, it was not long before the picturesque compound became a popular destination for art lovers and collectors. Its reputation was further entrenched by its early exhibitions of renowned painters of the Southwest including Nicolai Fechin, Eric Sloane, Freemont Ellis and Joseph Henry Sharp. Showcasing these artists ignited a renewed interest in the Taos and Santa Fe, New Mexico, colonies of the early 20th century which were essential in laying the groundwork for the region to become the art mecca it is today.Chris Morel, Truchas Peaks, Early Spring, oil on linen, 12, x 24”

When Richard and Nedra Matteucci acquired the gallery in 1988, they continued the tradition of housing historical works of the region and hosting seminal exhibitions by the likes of Leon Gaspard, Wilson Hurley and Clark Hulings. The Matteuccis also made room for more living artists in their collection, showcasing the work of significant Western artists Walt Gonske, Gary Niblett, John Moyers, William Acheff, Kang Cho, Laura Robb and Chris Morel. In doing so, they were part of yet another surge of vitality in the Santa Fe and Taos art scenes.Eanger Irving Couse (1866-1936), Crane Hunter, oil on canvas, 24 x 30”

“The gallery began with important historical Western art with a focus on the Taos Society of Artists,” says gallery director Dustin Belyeu. “By focusing on historical art originally and then melding in living artists we have increased the accessibility of art to a much broader collecting base. By contributing to the Santa Fe art market and the Western art market more broadly for 50 years this is a milestone that marks the importance the Matteucci Galleries has to our artists and collectors alike.”Terri Kelly Moyers, American Lady, oil on panel, 36 x 36”

When the Matteuccis installed a tranquil sculpture garden on the property they created an idyllic setting for works by a multi-generational group of bronze and stone artists that include Dan Ostermiller, Glenna Goodacre, Michael Naranjo and Doug Hyde. The addition only increased the gallery’s allure which, over the years, has attracted such luminaries as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Prince Charles and Princess Diana, and Elizabeth Taylor to its grounds. Providing visitors with the opportunity to appreciate art within a serene, intimate, and historical context encourages deeper connections with the art than a more conventional gallery or museum setting.William Berra, Spectator, oil on Masonite, 30 x 30”

“Through the years there have been many contributing factors to the gallery’s success,” primarily loyal clients and collectors of quality artwork,” explains gallery owner Nedra Matteucci. It has always been [my intent] to have great quality, fair prices, and treating everyone well. The gallery itself was designed to feel like home where people can enjoy the highest quality of historic Western art.”Walt Gonske, Dry Arroyo with Chamisa, oil on linen, 17 x 25”

The focus of Nedra Matteucci’s 50th anniversary show will be on 30 of their living artists, but in homage to the artistic roots of the region—and the gallery—a selection of works of historical significance by Fechin, Sharp, Gaspard and Eanger Irving Couse will also be on display.Nedra Matteucci purchased the gallery in 1988 and has upheld and uplifted its reputation ever since.“New Mexico has such a rich cultural history,” adds Matteucci. “It has been an honor for me and the gallery to play a part in the preservation of New Mexico’s historic art and in shaping the Santa Fe art market and community Santa Fe. —
