Artist Focus: Karen Roehl

A focus on the artwork of Karen Roehl

Wild Ride, acrylic on canvas, 36 x 36”Artist Karen Roehl draws inspiration from abstract expressionism. “Those courageous aims to enter and explore the ranges of human essence is only matched by my reverence for painters devoted to realism, who depict the outer world through their keen ability to see into the heart of it,” says the artist. Her most recent body of equine work attempts to meld the two genres of non-objective and representational art through the magnificent forms of horses against emotive, abstract backgrounds.Distant Sites, oil on canvas, 10 x 13”

Wild Breed, acrylic on canvas, 36 x 48”“Emotionally [horses] are kindred spirits, as witnessed through their eyes and personal natures. These powerful and elegant creatures have been indispensable to our worldly accomplishments by way of arduous, dedicated labor. We are beholden to them and admire them for much,” she adds. Roehl renders these majestic and gentle beings with elegant detail, set against raw backgrounds of expressive mark-making and color. “Sensations, those experienced through seeing, mingle with those that exist in cryptic form and line the recesses of my interior. The result is an inspired amalgamation that I earnestly attempt to translate onto canvas in hopes that viewers may capture a glimpse of this experience for themselves.”

Roehl’s work will be featured in the Summertide show at Tierra Mar Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, from July 8 to 17. An opening reception and artist meet-and-greet takes place July 8 from 5 to 7 p.m. —
