Artist Focus: Jennifer Wendt

A focus on the artwork of Jennifer Wendt

Even as a child, Jennifer Wendt was always in awe of the beauty of nature. Surrounded by fields and woodlands as she grew up, she would spend hours wandering and exploring. “I felt at home in the open spaces and woodlands,” says the artist, who began drawing at a young age. “Not only do I put my heart and soul into each of my paintings, I strive to capture that fleeting moment of intimacy and connection with the animal: that brief eye contact or being able to witness a tiny part of their life. I want others to be able to feel the connection to them as I do, to feel that awe and appreciation, and ‘home’ as nature has always been for me.”Rolling Thunder, oil on canvas, 24 x 48”Wendt’s chosen subjects are North American wildlife and horses. “I am passionate about what I know best. I have spent countless hours simply observing the anatomy and behavior of my subject matter. With this knowledge, I feel as if I can better portray the animals and honor them the best
I can,” says Wendt.Two Brothers, oil on board, 16 x 32”

Surrounded by nature every day alongside her family and husband, Wendt owns and operates her small ranch, with cattle, horses, dogs and barn cats. She works out of her home studio, but can otherwise be found riding one of her horses, tending cattle, checking fences, choring or doing any of the other tasks around the ranch. Wendt’s next exhibition will be the Legends West Art Show in Great Falls, Montana, from August 18 to 21. —
