Geared Up

The Summer Stampede returns with more than 30 artists exhibiting paintings, sculpture, silverwork and more.

While the National Ranching Heritage Center has Western art and gear on display year round, there’s one special night where the public has the opportunity to purchase that artwork and chat directly with the artists. It’s the Summer Stampede Western Art and Gear Show, exhibiting nearly 100 Western art and gear pieces by more than 30 artists working in painting and sculpture, as well as silverwork, spurs, bits, knives and more. Mary Ross Buchholz, Boots O’Neal 6666 Cowboy, charcoal and graphite, 13 x 10”

Herman Walker, Easing Them Off, oil, 12 x 16”

“This year’s Summer Stampede will feature several new artists as well as all new work from many of our regular participants. We are expecting two new braiders to join us,” says Scott Jones, Helen DeVitt Jones Endowed Director of Collections, Exhibits, and Research at the National Ranching Heritage Center. “We are excited to have the works of Xiang Zhang, Bev Pettit and Shawn Cameron available alongside all of our other wonderful photographers, sculptures, painters, spur makers and other traditional cowboy artists.”  T.D. Kelsey, On the Hook, bronze, ed. 5 of 5, 6 x 11 x 14”

Other artists and craftspeople exhibiting in the sale include Teal Blake, Bruce Greene, T.D. Kelsey, Mary Ross Buchholz, Mikel Donahue, Herman Walker, Buddy Knight, Julie Oriet, Justin Asher, Ben Tolley and Graeme Quesinberry.Xiang Zhang, Searching for Calf, oil on linen, 16 x 20”

“We are working with our 30-plus artists to have one of the premier Western art and gear shows in the country. This is an opportunity to meet many of the artists in person and to join us for a night of art, good food and dancing to a great band. I encourage anyone who is planning on attending to get your tickets early,” says White. Mary Ross Buchholz, Patriarch of the Plains, bronze, 15½ x 16½ x 7”

The Summer Stampede takes place from 6 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, June 4. After the initial in-person sale, which is followed by dining and dancing, the remaining pieces will be available for buyers to purchase from remote locations by visiting www.summerstampede.com. —
