On May 27 and 28 the Santa Fe Art Auction will present the second annual Art of the West sale in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The auction will coincide with the popular Rodeo de Santa Fe, which brings people of all types to experience the Western culture of the great city in the Southwest.
Fritz Scholder (1937-2005), Indian with Cat, 1973, color lithograph, ed. 9 of 100, Estimate: $2/4,000
“The Art of the West auction is as Western as we get here,” says Gillian Blitch, president and CEO of the auction house. “And this year will be no exception. In this auction, collectors will find many of the great contemporary Western artists such as Jerry Jordan, Kim Wiggins and Billy Schenck as well as past and present members of the Cowboy Artists of America such as Gary Niblett, William Moyers and Joe Beeler.”
The auction will also include a selection of Western furniture and ephemera, as well as Navajo textiles, quickly becoming a staple of the auction house.
Dave McGary (1958-2013), Trophies of Honor, 1994, polychrome bronze, ed. 20 of 75, 23⁷/8 x 13¾ x 7½” Estimate: $4/6,000
“We typically make this into a fun weekend event,” says Blitch. “The auction will happen over Memorial Day which is not just the kick-off of the Santa Fe art season but also the weekend we see visitors from Texas and much of the West arriving back in Santa Fe. We share the weekend on the calendar with the Santa Fe Rodeo, which also brings many visitors from the neighboring states.”
Bill Hughes (1932-1992), Comencheros Trading at the Taos Pueblo, 1974, oil on canvas, 24 x 36” Estimate: $1,5/2,500
Highlights run the gamut of Western and sporting art, from Ken Carlson’s Autumn Whitetail (est. $10/15,000) to Niblett’s Stranger on the Rio Grande (est. $10/20,000). The auction will also include a classic Charlie Dye titled Wet Days Branding, which carries a pre-auction estimate of $8,000 to $12,000.
Connie Tveten, Mimbres Magic, oil on board, 9½ x 9½” Estimate: $800/1,200
There will also be a group of works by John Nieto, Dave McGary’s Trophies of Honor (est. $4/6,000) and two bronzes from George Carlson, including Tarahumara Mother and Child (est. $4/6,000) and Matachine (est. $1/2,000).
