Every Memorial Day Weekend, the Phippen Museum holds its Western Art Show & Sale, a chance for Western art enthusiasts and fine art collectors to gather for three days at the Courthouse Plaza in historic downtown Prescott, Arizona. The annual tradition is currently in its 48th year and features some of the best Western artists working today, as well as a menagerie of events sprinkled in throughout the weekend.

Howard, Power of Prayer, organic soft pastels on canvas, 36 x 36”Taking place at the beautiful Yavapai County Courthouse Plaza is the Quick Draw Challenge & Live Art Auction on May 28 and 29 at 2 p.m., in which more than 20 participating artists are challenged to create a finished piece of artwork in only 60 minutes. These works will then be immediately auctioned off before the paint has even dried. In addition, an Artist Award Ceremony takes place at the Courthouse Plaza on Sunday, May 29 at 11 a.m.

Among those exhibiting at the 2022 event is pastel artist J. Howard. Born in Houston, Howard works diligently to combine a love for helping others with a love for artistic expression, utilizing the intricate detailing of hyperrealism to present images through organic soft pastel drawings on canvas. The artist says she is inspired by personal observations, finding that her “identity is submerged in the beauty, colors and concept of hyperrealism and how her images can incorporate water and/or superimposition.” Her goal, she explains, is to move beyond simply recognizing colors “for their inherent qualities but also [incorporating] them in such a way that each drawing goes beyond the natural depth of field for a photographic quality.”

A number events are also taking place at the Phippen Museum throughout the duration of the weekend event, including the 19th Annual Miniature Masterpiece Show & Sale, May 1 to June 5, and the Miniature Masterpiece Sale by Draw on May 30. —
