Highlights of recent sales in the Western art market.

Western Art Collector magazine has changed the way artists, galleries and collectors connect, and it has closed the gap that previously existed in the Western art market. Our SOLD! section is where we highlight these connections, as well as other sales occuring within the market. Within this monthly section you can read just some of the feedback pouring into our office from coast to coast about art sales, including some made directly from the pages of the magazine. You never know—your next art purchase could be in this issue.

The October 2021 issue of Western Art Collector featured new work by California painter S.C. Mummert, who had painted a cowgirl within a light-green pickup truck in a piece called There Goes My Cowboy. The painter was working with Cowboy Artists of America artist Mehl Lawson, who had put Mummert in touch with a truck club in San Diego. “The president of the group calls me and these folks are some of the nicest people I’ve met. They tell me they have a perfect truck for me. Not only do they let me use the truck, they come to me, right to my studio,” Mummert said in the issue. “The truck arrives and this thing is smoking, just really beautiful. Turns out its Kenny Loggins and Jim Messina’s truck. And then my model, who I had already set up for the visit, she’s a truck person so she’s just as excited. All the planets aligned and there was electricity in the air.”

The work made a profound statement to the anonymous founder of the Booth Western Art Museum, so much that he had to own it right away. “The anonymous founder of both the Booth and Savoy [Automobile Museum] was leafing though the magazine a couple months ago, as he does religiously every month, and spotted this piece,” relates Booth executive director Seth Hopkins. “He called me to ask if I had any info on the artist...and what
I thought of the painting. I agreed with him that it was very good and would be a big hit at Savoy. We are also big fans of a good title and this one certainly fit the bill. I called Shanan [Campbell] at [Sorrel Sky Gallery] and asked if it was still available and we made the purchase. It was bought directly out of the pages of Western Art Collector.”—
