On April 26, Bonhams will host its next Western Art sale in Los Angeles with approximately 100 lots hitting the block. The auction will include highlights from some of the biggest names available in a variety of subjects and sizes. Katherine Halligan, Bonhams’ Western art specialist, says, “It’s going to be a fun sale. We have a nice mix of historic and contemporary works, and we have a very strong representation of bronzes.”
Maynard Dixon (1875-1946), Glory After Storm, oil on canvas laid to artist’s board, 20 x 16” Estimate: $60/80,000
Frederic Remington (1861-1909), The Bronco Buster, bronze with brown patina, 23½” Estimate: $50/70,000
There are five different oil paintings by Maynard Dixon in the sale that range from 6 by 8 inches up to midsize pieces. The leader of the group is Glory After Storm (est. $60/80,000), painted in his Tucson, Arizona, studio in 1944. “It overlooks the Santa Catalina Mountains,” says Halligan. “It’s dramatic with a painterly storm head coming up over the mountains. The light is incredible, and the clouds are so dramatic.” Another among the five is Evening on Orocopio (Painted Canyon) that has an estimate of $20,000 to $30,000.
Two portraits by Joseph Henry Sharp are also among the standout works coming from a Utah collector. The pieces—Bawling Deer (Frank Martinez, Pa˘h Weˉlah) and Crucita-Taos Indian Girl—are relatively the same size and according to Halligan depict two of his favorite models. Each painting has an estimate of $40,000 to $60,000.
Joseph Henry Sharp (1859-1953), Bawling Deer (Frank Martinez, Pa˘h Weˉlah), oil on board, 13½ x 9¾” Estimate: $40/60,000
Joseph Henry Sharp (1859-1953), Crucita-Taos Indian Girl, oil on canvas board, 13¾ x 9¾” Estimate: $40/60,000
The top lot among the bronzes is Frederic Remington’s The Bronco Buster with an estimate of $50,000 to $70,000. “It’s number 227 and has the Roman Bronze Works mark,” says Halligan. This sculpture is the first of 22 bronzes that Remington completed in his lifetime and was modeled in 1895. Another notable sculpture is Richard V. Greeves’ 1980 work Kiowa. The piece, estimated at $25,000 to $35,000, is also the standout of the contemporary lots for both importance and its commanding 73-inch height.
Sydney Lawrence (1865-1940), The Alaska That Was, oil on canvas, 16 x 20” Estimate: $15/25,000
Other items in the auction include Sydney Laurence’s The Alaska That Was (est. $15/25,000), a rare vignette painting by the artist; and a small collection of lots benefitting the Mesa Verde Collection. —
