Curating the West

Each Month We Ask Leading Museum Curators About What’s Going On In Their World.

 Eric Broussard, Curator
The Bryan Museum
Galveston, TX, (409) 632-7685, www.thebryanmuseum.org

What event (gallery show, museum exhibit, etc.) in the next few months are you looking forward to, and why?
I’m very excited to be curating an exhibit on the history of the building that now houses the Bryan Museum. It served as an orphanage for almost a century. We have been able to get in touch with several people who lived here as children and are willing to be interviewed to give us a better understanding of what the building was like in its former incarnation. This special exhibit will be permanently dispersed throughout various parts of the museum, and to tell the story of the building and the people who lived here.

What are you reading?
Right now, I am reading The Texas Rangers by Walter Prescott Webb (1935).

Interesting exhibit, gallery opening or work of art you’ve seen recently.
I recently had the pleasure of becoming reacquainted with the work of Henry F. Farny. We have his painting Ogalala Fire on display in our “Rest of the West” Gallery. His uncanny ability to capture the essence of his subjects and his attention to detail are astounding. Although this is not surprising when one considers that he studied under Albert Bierstadt in Germany while in his 20s.

What are you researching at the moment?
I am currently researching the governmental structure of the Texas Republic for an educational video series that we are producing. The videos are meant to supplement the teaching of Texas history in the classroom while using examples from the museum’s collection.

What is your dream exhibit to curate? Or see someone else curate?
I would love to do a retrospective about sculptor Elisabet Ney. Especially some of her early artwork commissioned by Otto Von Bismark and other famous European leaders. She did not immigrate to the United States (Texas) until she was 39, and I would be thrilled to be able to display some of her early works to showcase how adjusting to the West influenced her life and art.
