The Scottsdale Art Auction frequently boasts a high number of lots with no reserves, which means as long as there is at least one bid for any given lot, then that lot will sell, no matter how low the hammer price. Those no-reserve lots are returning to this year’s sale, which will take place April 8 and 9 in Scottsdale, Arizona.
G. Harvey (1933-2017), Texas Sunrise, 1990, oil on canvas, 16 x 20” Estimate: $28/38,000
The auction will offer approximately half of its 446 lots with no reserves, many of them from the first session held on April 8. Session I typically highlights more affordable pieces, including small works and studies. But the session also features some magnificent works from some of the great Western artists.
“These no-reserve lots are a lot of fun to watch because they can go either way: the sale price could be great for the buyer or, depending how things go with bidding, it could benefit the seller,” auction partner Brad Richardson says.
Highlights from this year’s first session include Ray Swanson’s Riding Old Burro, a work that shows several Navajo children around a burro as they play with some sheep. The work shows several Swanson hallmarks: more contemporary clothing, children and amazing Arizona land forms. The work is estimated at $20,000 to $30,000.
Martin Grelle, Wolves at Blacktail, 2009, oil on canvas, 28 x 20” Estimate: $35/50,000
Ray Swanson (1937-2004), Riding Old Burro, oil on canvas, 36 x 48” Estimate: $20/30,000The sale will feature 11 works by G. Harvey—they will complement seven Harvey works in Session II—that show his ability to paint glorious light in a variety of places, from Texas Hill Country to New York City to Washington, D.C. In Texas Sunrise (est. $28/38,000) Harvey paints two riders with some pack horses as they wade through a river.
A cowboy plays a prominent role in Bill Anton’s A Moment in Time (est. $12/18,000), showing a rider taking a quiet break above a winding river. Martin Grelle will be represented by two works: Near Water’s End (est. $50/75,000) and Wolves at Blacktail (est. $35/50,000). Harry Jackson, who painted and sculpted both cowboys and Native Americans, will have eight works in the sale, including Silent Pardners (est. $4/6,000).
Tony Abeyta, Canones, New Mexico, oil on canvas, 20 x 27” Estimate: $8/12,000
Harry Jackson (1924-2011), Silent Pardners, 1973, bronze, ed. of 10, 12” Estimate: $4/6,000
Elsewhere in the sale will be a huge selection of wildlife pieces, with terrific examples from Greg Beecham, Dustin Van Wechel, Bonnie Marris, Trevor Swanson, Chad Poppleton, William Alther, James Morgan, Daniel Smith and many others. —
