Claggett/Rey Gallery owner Bill Rey first met James Reynolds (1926-2010) in 1989 at a lunch with Joe Beeler in Sedona, Arizona. The gallery in Vail, Colorado, started representing Reynolds in 1992 until his passing in 2010. For the last 15 years of Reynolds’s life, his most productive period, Claggett/Rey represented about 85 to 90 percent of his market.

They started having annual shows—sometimes they were one-man shows and sometimes paired up with artists such as Beeler and Herb Mignery. Some of the shows were pure landscape, and others included Western and wildlife paintings.
“We gave Jim the freedom and encouragement to pursue landscape painting, which had always been the background for his Western subjects,” Rey says. “We always have a number of the finest paintings by James Reynolds in the gallery.

This summer, in August of 2022, the gallery will focus on the world of James Reynolds, featuring Westerns, landscapes and wildlife, mostly late-period painting. Jim Reynolds is one of the finest colorists to ever paint the West, and his legacy stands strong at the highest level of truly ‘fine art.’ Savvy collectors are quietly buying up his rare work which will stand the test of time as great American painting. Jim was not painting camera-composed snapshots, he was deep and a master of the creative process, painfully challenging himself with each work to attain the highest standards in his mind of composition, color and values.”—
