Colorado painter is building steam with his textured landscapes
In the early fall of 2021, Native American Art magazine hosted a silent auction in Santa Fe, New Mexico. One of the works in the sale was by painter Nathanael A. Volckening. Not only the did the work sell (with proceeds going to charity), but the landscape painter was suddenly on everyone’s radar. Known for his soft color palette and textured painting technique, Volckening is an artist worth keeping your eyes on. He’s represented by Parsons Gallery of the West in Taos, New Mexico. Sorrel Sky presents new workby Roberto Ugalde
Exquisite color, beautiful texture and entrancing scenery are some of the qualities of paintings by Roberto Ugalde, who shows his work at Sorrel Sky Gallery. The artist, who was born in the Sierra Madre mountains of Mexico, uses a Jackson Pollock-like method to create his paintings. Like Pollock, Ugalde throws and drips his paint and then moves it around with a palette knife. Where Pollock would aim for abstract expressionism, Ugalde aims for realism within nature. “Every time I look around me,” he says, “I see this beautiful world full of colors and forms and my first impulse is to transform my vision and emotions in a way that connects and reconnects people to nature.” See more of his work at www.sorrelsky.com.
