Artist Focus

Douglas Allen

A focus on the artwork of the artist Douglas Allen

Douglas Allen, American master painter of wildlife and landscapes, paints images that sparkle with light, evoking the tensions and quiet dramas of life in the wild. Depicting animals against broad backdrops of high mountain lakes, vast rolling grasslands and misty forests, Allen’s works establish a strong sense of place and mood. The Power of One, oil, 34 x 44”

He was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, in 1935. As a child, Allen’s favorite place to be was drawing the animals at the Central Park and Bronx zoos. Influenced by Howard Pyle, N.C. Wyeth, William R. Leigh, Carl Rungius and Frederic Remington, Allen studied under W.J. Aylward, a pupil of Pyle, at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts, and later with Paul Bransom in Jackson, Wyoming.

Allen’s career began illustrating big game animals for magazines and books. His artwork appeared in Outdoor Life, Sports Afield and the Reader’s Digest. Notable books he illustrated are Jack O’Connor’s The Big Game Animals of North America and Clyde Ormond’s The Complete Book of Hunting. Collectively his illustrations are in more than 35 books.Near Brooks Lake, Wyoming, oil, 9 x 14”

Allen’s paintings hang in the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson; the Glenbow Museum, Alberta, Canada; Brandywine River Museum, Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania; and the Hiram Blauvelt Art Museum, Oradell, New Jersey, among others. In 2019, Allen’s one-man show hung at the Brandywine River Museum alongside a major Wyeth retrospective.

In 1972, Allen and his father co-authored the book N.C. Wyeth, The Collected Paintings, Illustrations and Murals. Allen has penned numerous articles about artists including Rungius, Charles Livingston Bull, Philip R. Goodwin, Remington, Charles Russell, A.B. Frost and Wyeth.—
